Deferred Membership
Upon termination of employment with a participating StanCERA employer, you can choose to “defer” your retirement and go on deferred membership status if:
- You are non-vested without 5 years of service credit but may return to an employer under StanCERA in the future.
- You are vested with 5 years of service credit.
- You are employed by another public employer and are eligible to establish reciprocity.
- Your employment status changes from a full-time position to a part-time position, and you no longer contribute to StanCERA.
TYPES OF DEFERRED MEMBERSHIP
Deferred Non-Vested Member – A member who is not vested but no longer employed by a participating StanCERA employer. They have elected to leave their contributions “on deposit” with StanCERA should they return to an employer under StanCERA and start earning retirement service credit again to become vested.
Deferred Vested Member – A member who is vested but no longer employed by a participating StanCERA employer. They have elected to leave their contributions “on deposit” with StanCERA and retire at a later date when they are eligible and ready to begin receiving their lifetime retirement benefit.
Deferred Reciprocal Members – A member who is no longer employed by a participating StanCERA employer who elected to leave their contributions “on deposit” with StanCERA and successfully established reciprocity with an eligible public retirement system.
