Q. If a deferred member dies, what benefits may the beneficiary expect to receive?
A.The beneficiary would be entitled to only a lump sum refund of the member's accumulated retirement contributions, plus accrued interest.
Q.As a deferred member, am I eligible for the $5,000 lump sum death benefit?
A.This benefit is payable only to retired members. Deferred members, once retired, will be eligible for the lump-sum death benefit if their last active service was with StanCERA.
Q.I'm currently in deferred status. When I meet StanCERA's eligibility requirements to retire, will my retirement benefits begin automatically?
A.No, they do not automatically begin once you meet the minimum eligibility requirements. When you are eligible and ready to retire, you will need to submit an Application for Service Retirement and requested documentation within 60 days prior to your retirement date.
Q.If I am a deferred member that no longer lives in the area, what will I need to do when I am ready to retire?
A.If you are no longer in the area, you may apply for retirement by mail. You must submit your retirement application and required documentation within 60 days prior to your retirement date. Either contact StanCERA or go to forms to print the Application for Service Retirement to be mailed in.
